Calling someone a Doctor of the Church is not a reward for a saint who needs another title in heaven. It is a gift to the faithful. A doctor is proposed because he or she sheds light on a doctrine in a way that helps the whole Church see more clearly. Augustine helps us see grace. Thomas Aquinas illuminates truth. Therese gives the Church the Little Way.
The Point in Practice
That is why Father Bonaventure thinks St Faustina deserves serious consideration. Her Diary is not a systematic theology textbook. It is a record of a Polish nun’s prayer, suffering, questions, and conversations with Christ. That is precisely part of its power. Reading it feels less like receiving a lecture and more like overhearing a saint speak honestly with the Lord.
Her central contribution is not simply that God is merciful. Catholics already know that. The contribution is a way of seeing mercy that deepens how we understand God’s love, the Incarnation, redemption, and the sacraments. A real doctor gives the Church a lens, a prism through which familiar truth shines with new colors.
What This Means for Catholic Men
The Church is right to be careful with private revelation. Souls matter. New devotions and new interpretations should be examined patiently, charitably, and with theological seriousness. The early caution around Faustina was not evidence that she should be dismissed. It was the sort of discernment the Church owes the faithful.
If Faustina becomes a Doctor of the Church, it will not make her more holy. It will tell ordinary Catholics: this is a safe and fruitful place to think. Read the Diary. Look again at mercy. Ask what changes when love is not merely one divine attribute and mercy another, but the way divine love keeps coming after us.
