We are joined by Dr. Taylor Marshall from the New Saint Thomas Institute to discuss the evils of socialism. What’s wrong with socialism? Was Jesus a socialist? Does Christian Socialism, Democratic Socialism, Communism, or Distributionism count as socialism? Listen as we answer these questions while sipping on an Irish whiskey and talking about different items to get men for Christmas.

While I like your show and I agree with a lot of the positive points in this discussion, I think this episode would be stronger without Dr. Marshall creating straw men of the left. I am not a Democrat; I am independent. I don’t think that having the “backbone” to make fun of the left as “miserable people” and the the host laughing is helpful. Many people who disagree with him are very decent, hardworking happy people who work hard for their families and communities.

I am greatly concerned with the polarization of society and am dismayed that is not relayed as a personal opinion, which is fine, but Catholic dogma. To me, this seems to fly in the face of the previous episode I heard that Catholics are not fundamentalists.

No barbs, or witticism – Just my opinion.

      Hey Nathan,
Thanks for the feedback! We hope in the discussion we made it clear what is Catholic teaching and what is our opinion, however, at times I’m sure we fall short. Our goal was to really drive home the idea that socialism is not acceptable as a Catholic. Socialism has been condemned by the Church and there are many people who are not aware that is the case. We also believe there are aspects of certain parties that, as a Catholic, one cannot support. Abortion and euthanasia are non-negotiables.
I hope that helps some. I appreciate you giving the episode a listen and I’m grateful for the feedback. Always good to hear. Cheers brother!

Interesting, but if you frame it as Dems vs. Reps, you fall into a hole. Remember Bush bailing out the banks? That’s ok because he’s a republican or because that money is saving businesses that were run incorrectly (including illegal bribes in some cases) ? But Dems wanting to help poor people is socialism? It’s amazing how fast socialism becomes a part of capitalism when it’s propping up the rich.

But hey, I am coming from a perspective of a Catholic school teacher who just lost 250 dollar tax write off so billionaires can get more breaks. But I’m a socialist if I suggest maybe they shouldn’t get so many breaks.

I don’t think we framed this topic on “Dems vs. Reps”. We framed it around socialism. Appreciate you listening to the episode and thanks for teaching at a Catholic School. We need more Catholic teachers in the schools.
